First thing you need for sustainable food source is HEIRLOOM seeds, without them you will have to buy new seeds every growing season and if there are no stores nearby, off the grid, or the grid doesnt exist anymore, you will be up sh*t creek without a paddle. So buy your HEIRLOOM seeds. I will provide you with links and more info on how to collect and protect them as they are literally your main source for sustainable food.

Second thing you need for sustainable food is a plot of land that has fair drainage, gets full sun and has been freed of rocks, clay and weeds. For a family of 4, with a good variety of food, you need a plot of roughly 4m x 4m or 1m x1m per person. You can always have more as i will explain how to preserve and store the extras.

Xavier, heirloom are great, but one only need get non-GMO non-hybrid. any open pollinated seed will grow true to its parent. The best I found for saving seeds is seed to seed by suzanne ashworth and that's good for our Canadian cold weather plants.
