Whether you believe in any Mayan prophecies about 2012 or not, here are some facts to consider.
Before industrialism began the human population of Earth was between 1-2 billion, now we're closer to 7 billion.
Before industrialism, there was in general a lot of pristine forests teeming with wildlife, the rivers, lakes and oceans were mostly unpolluted and had large fish populations. Now most of that land is either poorly suited for growing crops (heavy clay soil or unfirm sandy soil), urbanized, worn out or completely depleted by industrial petrochemical agriculture. Most lakes and rivers have been either drained or polluted by industrial waste, oceans have been overfished and acidified by pollution.
Before industrialism, we did not rely much on fossil fuels. Now, it's our life support system. The only thing keeping billions of people from starvation is steady oil production. The only thing keeping people warm in the North is gas and coal. Oil production peaked in 2008 and will begin to decline shortly. Plus, these resources are unevenly distributed and will not be available to everyone if the global transportation network fails.
It will be a struggle to survive in the future as we are too many and resources are too few, in most areas.
These are just the tip of the iceberg of real issues that seem to be converging around 2012, that have nothing to do with specific prophecies.

Well Johan, its years later and guess what, we hit 7 billion people, saudi arabia will have no oil by 2031, Canada is about to become the leader in oil exports (dirty oil! i may add) which with the russians, canadians and americans finally starting to use their own oil instead of stock piling it as they have, we will be oil free by 2050.
Sadly oil need for fossil fuels is changing but into plant fuels, and i don't mean ethanol from soy, corn and wheat. I'm talking about the use of enzymes that are used to break down plant matter into fuel called methanol which is far worse for the environment than ethanol or petrol. We already raped the earth for fossil fuels, now governments want us to rape all the plants of the Earth for our insatiable thirst for fuels, this would make Canada, South America South East Asia, and the Congo the world leaders in fuels until every plant has been burned through our cars, trucks, buses, trains, powerplants and yes even your lawn mower.
The real test is not to live without motorized transportation and all the benefits of fuels as it will kill hundreds of millions, but to find cleaner more sustainable ways too, before 2050. Hydrogen fuel cells, geo static, electric fuel cells powered by clean energy sources, there's been talk of batteries that are made from bacteria combined with enzymes. All it takes is deciding on one uniformed power source and the rest is up to the general public and private sectors to embrace it for cost efficiency and availability.

Get rid of the oil barons and profit controllers, the drivers of bad business. We are and made to be consuming whores, so don't be one.
