The train carts were doing their thing, shifting and hitching and rocking along at a pleasant speed. I had been inside this particular car through a rainy night and was glad to climb on top to get some air. As I stood up cautiously to stretch, the idea hit me. What would it be like to jump from one boxcar to another, like I had seen on TV so many times before? Could it really be done? ...maybe so.
I made my way slowly to the top edge between the cars and took it all in. The distance was not too far for me to handle, I knew that from being on track team in high school. The shifting between carts was to my disadvantage..... but didn't look that hard to overcome. I chose to sit down and give it a second thought before making a final decision.
And was I glad I did! It came to me that jumping from back to front car would be a lot riskier than front to back, I would have the advantage of the train moving beneath me, rather than away from me! Makes sense.
With that clarity of mind, being glad I had taken the time to evaluate the situation before doing something foolish; I made my way to the rear of boxcar and stood to check the distance between the two, the landing potential, and how not to trip up during take off. I was ready!
I walked back a good pace and made a few long strides toward take off zone, stopped, looked, and went back.... more ready this time, I told myself.
I took my forward leap/high jump stance to prepare for the great adventure.
What is life all about if you don't take a dare now and then....
even if self-inflicted?
Here I go..... I'm gonna do it..... I know I'm gonna do it..... I think I'm gonna do it..... oh, what the heck.... do it already! And so I started out, 1,2,3,4 long strides and jumped twice as hard as was required (to play it safe) only to find myself going way beyond what I thought would be my landing mark. What with the train moving underneath me and all (in the way I had been fortunate enough to foresee beforehand)... I was flying!
However, this created a bit of mid-air panic....
And so I landed clutching the opposite cart on all fours.... rather hard impact on such a rigid frame (the carts and my own). Possibly, I had tightened up a bit while in mid-air; well, just a bit.... maybe a little more.
But it was done! And I knew...... I would never do it again.
